At least 4 airmen were injured in an attack that targeted the army’s Balad Air Force base in Salahuddin province of Iraq on Sunday. Earlier this military base was used by the US Army, although there are no reported casualties of any American soldier in this attack. The Balad Air Force Base is about 90 kilometers from the capital Baghdad.
Balad is the largest military base in Iraq and is known in the US military as the Logistic Support Activity (LSA) Anaconda. No group has claimed responsibility for this attack yet. On January 3, on the instructions of US President Donald Trump, Kassim Sulemani, the head of the Kurdish force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, was killed in a drone strike near Baghdadi’s internal airport.
According to the US, Sulaimani was planning attacks on US diplomats and soldiers in Iraq and West Asia. He had carried out several attacks in the past few months on coalition bases in Iraq, including the December 27 attack.
American and Iraqi personnel were casualties in this attack. General Suleimani also approved the attack on the US embassy in Baghdad on 31 December. In response, Iran conducted several airstrikes targeting US military bases in Iraq. The US has announced new sanctions on Iran on Friday. The United States has deployed more than 5,000 soldiers to Iraq to help the Iraqi army in its campaign against the Islamic State.
